Tidbit Tuesday | Water and Oil

Tidbit Tuesday | Water and Oil

For many years I have reduced and almost eliminated chemicals from my arsenal of household cleaning products. I basically use water and essential oils for most of my cleaning. I know, to many of you bleach lovers that sounds completely unsanitary. I was once a bleach lover too and if I’m completely honest, I will douse my tub and showers with bleach products once in a while, but very rarely. I made the switch to more natural and less caustic products that still get the job done and help preserve our pipes and planet.

Now that I am deliberately unemployed, I have more time to clean or at least I can clean when I’m in the mood instead of out of necessity or obligation. It is a real treat. However, I also think it is worth having a cleaning schedule and I will write about that in the up coming weeks. I need to personally implement what actually works, but for now water and essential oils are my weapons of choice.

I have found that using my Norwex EnviroCloth along with water and Thieves Essential oil from Young Living, my house gets clean and smelling fresh. Sometimes I use lemon or orange essential oils on my cloths or my dusting mitt.  At times I miss the smell of certain products that are embedded in my smell-memory. Some products my mother used were Spic and Span when mopping the floor or Pine Sol-comes to mind.

I think we have underestimated the power of natural products. Generations before us scrubbed and cleaned with something natural and now these items are somewhat fashionable and dare I say trendy, and for good reason. I would rather spend money on something that isn’t going to harm me as I inhale fumes into my lungs. We may not be aware but we are exposed to all kinds of environmentally toxic elements on a daily basis. The household is one place we can mitigate our exposure to chemicals.

If you haven’t transitioned to a chemical free lifestyle, I challenge you to consider doing so. Yes, I use a toilet bowl cleaner, not just water, but it’s a product I purchased through Norwex which is environmentally friendly. I love my surfaces and counters to be clean and free of germs, which essential oils such as Thieves can handle since it is known for its antibacterial properties. I often go solo and just use water to wipe down my counters, and the microfiber of the EnviroCloth conquers the task with ease.

Most of us are striving for cleaner air and water or at least we should be. Whatever products we use, they somehow returns to either the ground, sewer system or our rivers and oceans. I think it is time to be more conscientious and mindful of the choices we make and return to a kinder and gentler way of living. We often are complainers and blamers. Maybe it’s time to put some action behind our environmental snobbery and use some water and essential oils when performing those household chores.

Happy Cleaning
